The Fundamentals

Roles & Positions

Fundamentals are the gods of this world, standing above the mortal realm. In the beginning thousands of gods roamed the Familiar Lands, each one fighting for influence and power. This was the Age of Myth, where legends were often true, and nothing was unachievable. Many mortals during this period had achieved or surpassed the strength of the gods, and the line between life and death was blurred as chaos ran rampant. During the age of myth, were a mortal to kill a god, they'd usurp their position and take their place, Wrath is an example of one such mortal.

18 greater gods rose amongst the rest, creating factions that introduced a semblance of order during the Age of Myth. Though the lands remained untamed and disparaged, the domains are uncertain and the laws of reality constantly changed upon a whim. It was only after the arrival of the 19th Fundamental Authority that the world saw peace and stability for the first time. With his leadership he established laws and order, stabilizing a new world and ensuring that no one could challenge their power. Thus the Golden Age was born.

They are divided in two groups, The 7 Deadly Sins, and The 7 Heavenly Virtues, representing all mortals' ways in the Familiar Lands. They are all supervised by the overwhelming power of Authority. They live in another dimension, and often fight against incursions from Outsiders, strange beings that manage to pass between realms and end up in the Familiar Lands. Fundamentals can bestow their blessings to those they deem worthy of their virtues or sins, making them Chosen Knights, and giving them great powers. When a fundamental reproduces with a mortal, it creates Demigods.

Within the Familiar Lands, there are many churches to the gods, oftentimes worshipping all 14, however there are also many churches spreading the beliefs of a single god. To see a fundamental is a rarity, even when at death's door. Many will often say they see one, looking at them in the distance, however it can't be known if this is a hallucination or the truth, as they cannot be actively looked for. These cases are the most common among those that live by a Fundamental's tenets. The god's themselves will rarely act upon a mortal, including those they hate, though they'll sometimes get their cults to take care of them. Wrath being the exception, instead preferring to smite them himself, resulting in the Wrathbreaks within the Familiar lands.

The God-King

      • The 7 Holy Virtues

              • The 7 Deadly Sins

              • Unfamiliar Fundamentals

There also exist the four Unfamiliar Fundamentals, whose worship is strictly forbidden and considered heretical by Golden Decree. These four gods disagreed with Authority's plan and now reside within the Unfamiliar Lands, where nothing but anguish and misery exist. In truth, the Unfamiliar Lands are the remnants of the age of Myth, covered up by the creation of the Familiar Lands. The stabilizing of this new realm takes a severe toll on all of the 15 Fundamentals, making them individually weaker than the unfamiliar gods so long as they don’t decide to abandon the cause. Despite their efforts, in some ways the realms still overlap, allowing the existence of Truesight. The unfamiliar gods continue to harm the Familiar Lands without any signs of stopping, each desiring the rebirth of the Age of Myth, loving the world for what it was, and not the new world for what it is. If they were to succeed in this, no mortal within the Familiar Lands could possibly be prepared, resulting in the Unfamiliar tearing them apart.
