Licence

What you may reuse, what you may not, and what you agree to when you write here.

The short version

  • The writing is free to reuse — every write-up, description and entry in this archive is under CC BY-SA 4.0. Credit it, and keep what you build from it just as free.
  • The artwork is not. Every drawing, comic page and map is © basedbinkie, reproduced here with her permission. Nothing on this page gives you a licence to any of it.
  • The world is not either. The characters, places and stories are hers. A licence on the prose about them is not a licence to them.
  • Writing here means licensing what you write under the same terms, for good. You keep the copyright; you can't take the licence back.
  • Some of it was written elsewhere. Part of this archive came from the Familiar Lands Wiki, under the same licence. Those pages say so at the foot, and name who wrote them.

The written archive

Everything written on this site — write-ups, one-line descriptions, infobox entries, the names and notes attached to places on the maps — is published under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike 4.0 International licence.

In plain terms, you may copy it, quote it, translate it, rework it, and publish the result anywhere, including commercially, provided you do two things: say where it came from, and release what you made under the same licence. That second condition is the point of choosing this one over something more permissive: what was written in common stays in common, and nobody can take a copy and close it.

Writing that came from the Familiar Lands Wiki

Some of the writing here was not written here. Before this archive existed, much of it was written on the Familiar Lands Wiki by sixty-six people. That wiki published under the same licence — CC BY-SA 4.0 — which is what made it possible to bring the writing across at all, and what obliges us to keep crediting it.

Every imported entry says so at its foot, naming the page it came from and the people who wrote it, in the order they worked on it. One contributor edited anonymously and is credited as such; we hold their address and will not publish it.

The full record — every page, every name — is kept with this site's source code, so the credits can be checked against something other than the pages themselves. It deliberately carries no link back to the wiki: that site may not outlive this one, and a link that rots is worse than a name that does not.

If you wrote something there and find it here credited wrongly, or not credited at all, please write to us — the address is at the foot of this page. That is a mistake to fix, not a position to defend.

The artwork, and the world

The comics, the character art, the painted maps and every other illustration on this site are the work of basedbinkie. They are © basedbinkie, all rights reserved, and they appear here with her explicit permission. That permission covers this archive and nothing else.

The Creative Commons licence above does not extend to them. Downloading a comic page from this site does not give you the right to republish it, print it, sell it, or feed it to anything. If you want to use a piece of the artwork, ask her — not us, and not this page.

The same goes for the world itself. Alexandra, the Familiar Lands, the fungifolk, the Golden Age — the characters, the places and the stories are her creations. This archive describes them; describing something has never granted rights over it, and a free licence on our descriptions is not a free licence to her universe.

What you agree to when you contribute

When you send a suggestion, you agree to publish the text you wrote under CC BY-SA 4.0. Specifically:

  • You keep the copyright in what you write. Licensing is not signing it away.
  • The licence can't be withdrawn. Creative Commons licences are irrevocable by design — that is what makes them safe to build on. Deleting your account takes your name off your edits; it does not take the edits back.
  • It has to be yours to license. Don't paste in text from another wiki, a book, a forum post or anywhere else, however small. If a passage isn't yours, it isn't yours to put under this licence, whatever we write on this page.
  • Please don't paste in generated text either without saying so. This archive is worth reading because people who know the work wrote it.

A note for whoever runs this site later: this licence can't simply be changed. Every contributor licensed their work under it, so switching to another one needs the agreement of each of them individually, and any one of them can decline. That is the price of share-alike, and it was accepted knowingly.

How to credit an entry

Link to the page you took it from. Its own history page lists everyone who wrote it, which is what makes the attribution complete — you do not have to name each contributor yourself.

On a page brought across from the Familiar Lands Wiki, that history begins at the import. The people who wrote it before then are named in the note at the foot of the page, and crediting it properly means carrying that note with it.

Something like: “From Familiar Lands Archives, CC BY-SA 4.0”, with a link to the entry, is enough.

Something wrong here?

If you believe something on this site infringes your rights — a passage copied from elsewhere, an image that shouldn't be here — write to contact@familiarlandsarchive.com and it will be taken down while it is looked into.
