Sima Mäkinen

Background

Sima is a birdfolk, more specifically an owlfolk, a relatively common variant of Beastfolk with noticeably frail bones and lighter frames, which makes them much more fragile and easy to wound, but allows them to be incredibly dexterous. Owlfolk also specifically tend to be solitary beastfolk, but she takes this to the absolute extreme, having such crippling social anxiety that she can’t even make eye contact without crumpling, or suffers panic attacks within crowds. Sima's beastblood has been diluted to the point where she is flightless, though she still has feathers and other birdlike features. She uses her skis to get around quickly in the snow. Sima's owl eyes allow her to see clearly at night, but she doesn't see as well during the day, mostly because she would be sleepy from her nocturnal way of life.

Her parents named her after their favorite drink, mead, which translates to 'Sima' in Finnish. She decided to live up to the name by brewing her own batch and leaving it for the nearby villagers; she loves mead enough to own a Mead Factory, and thus enter the middle class of Great Europa. Her diet beyond mead is solely carnivorous, even regurgitating owl pellets after she finishes a meal, full of fur, teeth, and bones. Sima, being an owlfolk, hatched from an egg. She always carries her powdered eggshell to use for important enchantments. Sima will also occasionally hoot; her hooting is a way to claim and mark her territory, as well as a warning for others not to approach. Because her voice isn’t really threatening, though, people tend not to be too afraid of her calls, which works to her advantage. Usually, approaching Sima in any way is incredibly dangerous with her social anxiety trigger finger, but anyone entering her domain with some delicious mead to offer would have grounds for some peaceful negotiations.

Powers

Due to this awful weakness up close, Sima tends to stick far away as a crossbow sharpshooter, gaining quite the skill at shooting targets from incredible distances. This innate skill with the crossbow, combined with her enchanted magic arrows and innate social anxiety, makes her incredibly dangerous despite often being hesitant to kill, and she is said to have one of the highest kill counts among all knights, leaving mountains of corpses ranking in the triple digits.

Being an enchantment wizard, Sima can pool her own Magic into any item she wishes to create magical weapons and tools. She uses this skill, for example, to create powerful ice-enchanted crossbow bolts that can freeze people and objects from long distances. Another talent of hers is the ability to cloak herself in the environment through enchanting as well. Though, as only a minor enchantment wizard, her potential for creating enchantments is limited, and she could not be called a powerful spellcaster. Still, being a minor enchantment wizard with her incredibly sharpshooting capabilities, facing her is usually a death sentence even for some of the most experienced knights.

Trivia

Sima is based on Legendary Finnish Sniper Simo Häyhä, who is believed to have killed 500+ enemy soldiers in the Winter War.
